CIMG6072To be honest I have never heard of St. Albans before. Surely I knew the big cities in England but St. Albans became my home for two months and I loved it there. Everyone wants to go and visit the big cities but little towns in the English countryside have something special. Do you know the movie “The Holiday” with Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Kate Winslet and Jack Black? It’s my all-time favourite movie. Iris (Kate Winslet) lives in a small cottage in Surrey and it just looks so beautiful. I don’t know if I could live there forever but it’s perfect for one of those cold and snowy winter days.

St. Albans is a city in southern Hertfordshire and about 30 km north of London. It’s a perfect place to live when you’re working in the hectic city of London. Back in the day St. Albans was a Romanian city called Verulamium. In Verulamium Park you can still see some Roman ruins and the impressive St. Albans Cathedral is situated east of the park. One tip: if you visit St. Albans go to the pub “Ye Olde Fighting Cocks“. The owner claims that this is the oldest pub in England. But there are a lot of other people claiming the exact same thing about their pub. However this pub is one of the best I’ve ever been to. They offer a large range of different beers and they have live music and just the atmosphere there was great. It’s definitely worth a visit.

Apart from its Roman history and the Verulamium Park St. Albans has a beautiful city centre with all the old streets and houses and of course the well known Clock Tower. If you want to go shopping I recommend visiting The Maltings. There are shops like River Island, Topshop, H&M, Lush or Office (for more information click here). After a long shopping day you must be hungry, right? You could spend your evening at Jamie Oliver’s restaurant. Jamie’s Italian is located right in the city centre on Chequer Street and offers very delicious food and after that go to the pub I was talking about and enjoy the end of the evening with a pint of beer or a glass of wine for the ladies. Sightseeing, shopping, dinner & drinks…I would say that’s a perfect day, isn’t it?

Unfortunately it wasn’t the sunniest day when I took the photos but I hope you still enjoy the photos!
