The Hamptons are known as a weekend getaway for the rich and famous New Yorkers. They go there to escape the hectic New York for a while. The Hamptons are located about 2 hours from New York and can be reached by car, train or the “Hampton Jitney” bus.
The Hamptons region includes several small towns. Among the best known are Westhampton Beach, Southampton, East Hampton and Montauk which is also referred to as “the end” because it is located on the outermost edge of Long Island. The car is probably the best way to explore the different cities of the Hamptons because it gives you more flexibility and you can get several insights in one day.
My friend Anna and I flew to New York in August 2019. It was my second time in the city and I wanted to stay for one week to see as much as possible of the Big Apple. And this time I wanted to visit the Hamptons as well so we booked tickets for the Hampton Jitney that would take us to Montauk early in the morning and we would be back in NYC in the evening.
The Hampton Jitney stops at most of the cities of the Hamptons so you can book tickets to whatever city you would like to visit. We decided to go to Montauk because I’ve heard wonderful things and seen beautiful photos of that part of the Hamptons.
One of Montauk’s most famous sights is the lighthouse. It is located just outside the city center, but can be easily reached with a small bus. That’s what we did and it was absolutely worth it because as a tourist even the ride from one place to another is fun because you get to see the surrounding area and the countryside.
The beach in Montauk is the perfect place to swim, sunbathe and relax. You can also take a nice walk along the beach and watch sunrises and sunsets. Some people also go to the beach in the afternoon or evenings for a picnic and a glass of wine with family and friends.
Montauk’s city center has the typical American east coast atmosphere. The wooden houses make Montauk look like a small fishing village with cute little stores, cafes and restaurants.
To enjoy the moment Anna and I decided to sit down with some cocktails at Gosmann’s Bar. Cheers!
Afterwards we walked further along the coast and enjoyed the view.
Before heading back to New York we had dinner at a restaurant where I ordered a chicken burger and the bun was a croissant. I’ve never seen the combination of a burger and a croissant before and what can I say…it tasted interesting but a little too sweet for me 😉 Maybe it’s a typical Montauk thing…
A day trip to the Hamptons is perfect if you have been to New York before and have already seen all the NYC sights. With a visit to the Hamptons you can get to know and love another part of the east coast of the USA because the Hamptons are really great!
A funny story to end this blog post: Talking about the Hamptons and celebrities…on our way back to New York when we stopped at the bus stop in East Hampton and can you guess who we saw? Bill Clinton! He was standing on the side of the road talking to our bus driver. What a way to end a wonderful day in the Hamptons!
